If your Kwikset SmartCode 910 lock is beeping, unresponsive, or the keypad is flashing red — it’s likely time to change the batteries. This guide walks you through the process clearly and confidently.

When to Replace the Batteries

You may need to replace your batteries if:

  • The keypad flashes red after entering a code
  • The lock beeps but doesn’t turn
  • The motor sounds weak or delayed
  • The lock stops responding entirely

Tip: Replace the batteries every 12 months, even if the lock still works, to avoid getting locked out unexpectedly.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 new AA alkaline batteries

Do not use lithium or rechargeable batteries

  • Clean hands — no tools required

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement

Here’s how to change the batteries in your Kwikset 910:

Remove the Battery Cover

  • Locate the interior side of your lock (inside your home)
  • Slide the battery cover upward until it comes off

You’ll see the battery pack inside the lock housing

Remove the Battery Pack

  • Grasp the black plastic battery holder
  • Pull it straight up and out of the lock

Replace the Batteries

  • Remove all four old batteries
  • Insert 4 new AA alkaline batteries
    • Match the (+) and (–) markings carefully
    • Use brand-new, non-rechargeable batteries for best performance

Reinsert the Battery Pack

  • Slide the pack back into the lock the same way it came out
  • Make sure it’s seated properly

Replace the Battery Cover

  • Align the cover with the track
  • Slide it downward until it clicks into place

After You Replace the Batteries

  • Test the lock by pressing the Kwikset button
  • Enter your code to make sure it unlocks
  • If the lock doesn’t respond, remove and reseat the battery pack to ensure good contact

Helpful Tips

  • Keep extra AA batteries nearby for future replacements
  • Never mix old and new batteries in the lock
  • Don’t wait until the lock completely dies — low battery indicators are your early warning

Visual Reminder

According to the document image:

  • The battery pack is located directly behind the interior cover
  • Arrows on the cover show which way to slide it
  • There are clear diagrams showing battery direction (+/–)

If you’re unsure, always refer to the label inside the battery compartment.
