With Alarm.com, you can easily create, manage, and monitor unique access codes from your computer or mobile device. Learn the basics with getting started with Alarm.com before managing users and account settings.

What Is a User Code?

A user code is a 4-digit PIN that allows someone to:

  • Disarm your security system
  • Unlock connected smart door locks
  • Leave a record of when they entered or exited

Each user gets a unique code so you can track exactly who comes and goes — and when.

Step-by-Step: How to Add a New User Code

You’ll need to log into your Alarm.com account from a desktop or laptop.

1. Log into Alarm.com

  • Visit alarm.com
  • Enter your username and password

2. Go to the Users Tab

  • Click on the Security section in the main menu
  • Then select Users

3. Click Add User

  • Hit the blue “Add User” button
  • This opens the “Add User” screen

4. Fill Out the User Details

  • Add the user’s First Name and Last Name
  • Choose their access level:
    • Panel Access: Can disarm your system
    • Lock Access: Choose which smart locks they can use

Example: You could allow your dog walker access to just the front door, not all entry points

5. Set a 4-Digit User Code

  • Pick a code the user will remember — but don’t reuse your master code
  • Codes must be unique and cannot be duplicated

This protects you and allows for activity tracking by individual code

Limit Access by Day and Time (Optional)

Need to restrict access to certain hours or days?

  • Under “Access Schedule,” choose:
    • At All Times – Full access
    • Custom Schedule – Set specific days and times

Example: For a dog walker, you can allow access Monday–Friday, 11AM–2PM only

Optional Alerts: Get Notified When Codes Are Used

You can set up alerts so you get a notification when a user:

  • Unlocks the door
  • Disarms the system
  • Arrives or leaves during their time window

To create alerts:

  • Go to Notifications in your Alarm.com account
  • Set up a new notification based on code usage

Stay in the know even when you’re not home.

How to Edit or Delete a User Code

To Edit a Code:

  1. Go to the Users screen
  2. Click the pencil/edit icon next to the user’s name
  3. Change the name, schedule, access level, or PIN
  4. Save your changes

To Delete a Code:

  1. Go to the Users screen
  2. Click the trash icon next to the code you want to remove
  3. Confirm deletion

You can update or revoke access anytime with just a few clicks
