The Kwikset SmartCode 914 offers secure, keyless entry — and like any smart device, it runs on batteries. This support page helps you understand the key functions of your lock and walks you step-by-step through replacing the batteries when it’s time.

What You Need to Know First

The SmartCode 914 is designed to:

  • Let you unlock your door using a personal code (no key needed)
  • Lock the door with one touch
  • Support multiple user codes for family and guests
  • Work with smart home hubs via Z-Wave technology

But to keep all of these working properly, battery health matters.

Battery Replacement – Step-by-Step

You’ll typically replace your batteries once a year, or whenever the keypad becomes unresponsive, slow, or starts flashing red. Here’s how to do it safely and easily.

What You’ll Need:

  • 4 new AA non-rechargeable alkaline batteries
  • No tools required

Steps to Replace the Batteries:

  1. Remove the battery cover
Slide the cover up from the back side of the lock (interior side of the door).
  2. Remove the battery pack
Lift the entire battery holder straight out of the lock.
  3. Dispose of old batteries
Use a recycling container or follow local guidelines for safe disposal.
  4. Install four new AA batteries
Insert them into the battery pack — match the +/– symbols for proper polarity.
Do not use lithium or rechargeable batteries — alkaline only.
  5. Reinsert the battery pack
Slide it back into the lock housing until it fits snugly.
  6. Replace the battery cover
Slide it back down over the lock until it clicks into place.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Replace all 4 batteries at the same time
  • Keep a spare pack of AAs nearby for future use
  • Test your lock right after changing batteries to confirm everything works
  • Clean the battery compartment gently if there’s any corrosion or dust
